I COULD HAVE LEFT THE CAR

(2023) Graphite on wove paper, 34.2 x 30.3 cm.

‘I Could Have Left the Car’ is a continuation of a series of self-portraits developed after 2020. In this work, the symbolic presence of the deer, often associated with innocence, vulnerability, and spiritual renewal in art history, becomes a subtle focal point.

The drawing reflects on personal, self-inflicted trauma, positioning myself back in the driver’s seat both literally and metaphorically. The visualisation challenges the narrative of victimhood, suggesting that personal responsibility, or the refusal to confront one’s own destructive behaviors, ultimately leads to wreckage. Notably, the version of myself depicted in ‘Scarecrow’ (2021) occupies the passenger’s seat, either wounded or deceased after the crash, further emphasizing the consequences of neglecting one’s boundaries. By remaining in a burning car, ‘I Could Have Left the Car’ explores the paradox of human nature—the willingness to remain blind—while raising broader existential questions about self-awareness and culpability.
