DE BUURVROUW IS EEN KUTWIJF
Documentary film (1h 17 mins)
‘De Buurvrouw is een Kutwijf’ is a Dutch observational documentary that explores white, cis male culture. The film follows a close-knit group of male friends over a period of approximately two years, including during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its objective is to critically examine and either challenge or substantiate arguments about the ‘white, cis, straight man,’ a topic frequently addressed by radical feminist activists.
The documentary engages with contemporary discussions in gender studies concerning privilege. It questions the reality of the supposed advantages enjoyed by these individuals and examines whether their lives are indeed significantly easier due to their privilege, or if there are more complex factors at play. The film investigates which stereotypes about young men hold true and which do not. It also explores whether these young men perpetuate misogynistic attitudes towards women within their peer groups and whether they exhibit signs of internalized -isms. Furthermore, it addresses the challenges these individuals face in expressing their emotions and confronting personal issues while adhering to the expectations imposed by a toxic masculinity culture.
‘De Buurvrouw is een Kutwijf’ is available for screenings and presentations with both English and Dutch subtitles. You can request a screener via the contact page on this website. You can also check out updates or watch some sneak peeks via Instagram.
